Sierra Nevada 4/5th Feb

I would not normally bother to post about one particular Aire but in this case I will make an exception.
It was another 20 miles from Alhambra to the Aire up another (!) very steep road which reduced our mpg even further so the average since leaving Salobrena has been 22 mpg (YES 22MPG!).  This is compared to our usual average of 35 mpg.
(Sorry, that last paragraph was indeed a rant)
Anyway, the drive was well worth it!  We are parked up for the night in the ski carpark Aire at an altitude of 7800 feet above sea level which is well above the snow line.  The views are fantastic.  It is not as cold as we had feared and as I write this blog entry at 02:30 in the morning (woke up an hour ago and could not get back to sleep so thought I'd write this now) the outside temperature is hovering around zero degrees centigrade.
We are warm as toast in the van with the gas heating running on low.
It is quite weird to be up in the snow covered mountains when only yesterday morning we walked to the beach and the temperature was a very balmy 20 degrees centigrade.
The plan now is to spend a few hours up here walking over the mountains then drive towards Cordoba ready for more of that culture stuff!
I'm off back to bed now, good night!
